Summary on Grant Application Form
New optical materials will be developed, subjected to detailed spectroscopic appraisal, fabricated into devices (fibre, waveguide, etc) and performance assessed in relation to the intended applications. Materials include new glasses of low phonon energy, periodically poled nonlinear materials, crystal and glass, highly photosensitive glasses. These will be fabricated into various structures such as fibres, including cladding pumped fibres, fibre gratings, photonic-band gap fibre structures in bulk, waveguide and fibre geometry. Performance of devices based on these structures will be assessed with a view to their potential exploitation in applications. Devices will include lasers and amplifiers (fibre, planar guide, bulk) nonlinear optical devices such as optical parametric oscillators sensor devices, and a wide variety of components (fibre gratings, modulators, switches, filters). These devices and components will be targeted at applications in optical communications, information technology, sensing, materials processing.
