Summary on Grant Application Form
New digital signal processing systems for EDX analysis have data capture rates more than an order of magnitude greater than earlier analogue systems and can be interfaced with image analysis systems to provide compositional analysis rapidly and on a fine scale. This proposal is to install such a digital system to replace the analogue system on an existing SEM. This upgrade will permit greater analytical sensitivity for a larger number of elements and the routine identification of individual phases in regions containing several phases mixed on a submicron scale. The improved capability will be used in current projects on delayed ettringite formation, the hydration of alkali activated slag cements and diffusion on chloride and sulphate in concretes. The resulting understanding will be used to specify new methods for predicting the durability of concrete structures.
