We have recently discovered that catalytic amounts of iminium salts are able to efficiently catalyse the epoxidation of unfunctionalised alkenes and now wish to test a large number of chiral iminium salts by parallel synthesis. It is proposed to simply mix together a broad range of ketones with a broad range of secondary amines (parallel synthesis) and test the product iminium salts as catalysts for asymmetric epoxidation. From a grid of say 10 (ketones) x 20 (secondary amines) we should be able to rapidly test a very large number of potential catalysts for rate of reaction and enantioselectivity (combinatorial approach). We are also interested in the Baylis Hillman reaction and will attempt to enhance both rates and enantioselectivity of the process. We have recently found that certain metals can accelerate this reaction and that further acceleration is obtained by the use of diol ligands. We now wish to test a large number of combinations of metals and ligands under different conditions to determine the optimum set of reagents for maximum acceleration and enantioselectivity. This will again be done by a combinatorial approach. In both cases the method of testing will be by GC, including chiral GC.
