Luminescence offers an extremely sensitive probe of numerous physical and chemical reactions and is used at Sussex in programmes ranging from fundamental studies of lattice imperfections, improving crystalline and fibre optical waveguides, ion implanted laser waveguides, radiation dosimetry, studies of chemical reactions in polymers and ion-recombination luminescence from thermosetting resins. Previous work has centred on improving sensitivity and obtaining spectral data, but in ALL cases it is necessary to know the spatial variations and time developments of the luminescence signals. Previously this had not been possible but is now feasible by use of high resolution photon counting imaging. The new technology not only enhances the ability to improve our understanding of the fundamental science, but also will be of direct value in development of higher performance product applications.
