Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to establish the basic infrastructure required to understand and implement potentially low cost adaptive optical systems for industrial and medical applications and to apply adaptive optics to selected problems. This will be achieved by developing three key areas of expertise at the three University sites (coordinated by the ICSTM group) and applying adaptive optics to problems of potential interest to our industrial collaborators. We wish to do this research because we feel that adaptive optics need not be an expensive technology and that, by developing a breadboard system and sample elements, new applications (not known at present) will become feasible. We already know of a number of potential applications that might be possible should the cost of adaptive optics be appropriate and believe that other applications will emerge if we can demonstrate the feasibility of low cost AO.
