This proposal is for equipment to significantly help research into manufacturing tooling by clamping together thin metal profiled sheets. The complete stack of sheets forms a tool cavity for moulding plastics, die casting and metal forming. Dr Dickens showed laminated tooling can mould production polyurethane parts. This is a low pressure/temperature process and problems can occur when using laminated tools for high pressure injection moulding. Improvements are required in design and assembly of these tools to ease manufacture and improve tool life. Main aims of research into laminated tooling are to investigate design principles for these tools, study tool wear and failure in different applications such as injection moulding, die casting and metal forming. Presently, profiles are produced by laser cutting. However, there are problems with edge quality due to oxidation, burring and heat affected zones. Therefore, it is necessary to use abrasive water jet cutting. This work is novel as it studies design principles and tool life and expands laminated tooling into the much more demanding areas such as high pressure die casting. Potential impact of this is great and could give UK industry a dramatic lead in reduced costs and lead times for tooling.
