Summary on Grant Application Form
The availability of a small remotely operated vehicle (ROV) would greatly enhance open water aspects of many research activities at the Marine Technology Centre at Cranfield University. There are two areas of research that would particularly benefit at this time. The first is a mature research area at Cranfield involving the use of lasers in several viewing applications. These include enhanced underwater viewing for ROVs and divers and as input to computer generated virtual worlds for robotic applications. An ROV would provide a convenient platform for open water deployment that would overcome problems associated with diver deployment and also allow more dynamic experimental situations. The second area is the present development of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that would serve as a testbed for AUV technology. The ROV would provide needed support for seatrials especially in the early days when the risk of problems is higher. Finally, an ROV could be used in many other research areas by providing a convenient and safe deployment platform. An existing boat exists that could be used to deploy the ROV and expertise in the use of ROVs is available in-house.
