Summary on Grant Application Form
A number of composite structural components susceptible to through thickness failure will be manufactured, including a tapered curved element, a curved channel section beam, a stringer run-out and a sandwich panel edge element. Static and fatigue testing will be undertaken to determine failure mechanisms and loads. Methods of predicting strength combining statistical stress-based failure criteria and strain energy release rate based analyses will be extended to deal with 3D geometry. Finite element analysis will be carried out on each of the structural elements, and detailed correlation with experimental results undertaken. The results will be documented to provide validated methods for predicting through thickness strength of composite structural components. The work will be applicable to a wide range of composite structures, allowing more efficient design, reducing the amount of expensive testing required, and reducing the risk of costly and potentially dangerous structural failures.
