Summary on Grant Application Form
I am asking for 60k of EPSRC investment in a broadband OPO laser system that would become the mainstay of our bio-medical instrumentation research for the next decade. This is half the 120k cost of the system, with the rest coming from SmithKline Beecham, NPL and Edinburgh Instruments. The investment is of key importance for the applications research that drives the instrumentation research of the group. Short-term objectives include research into new measurement methods for stratum corneum hydration (bonding state of water), skin pigment profiles (blood oxygenation level, blanching, erythema) and trans-dermal drug diffusion. New instrumentation research includes a miniaturised opto-thermal measurement head, high resolution thermal emission decay spectroscopy and time-domain opto-thermal imaging. Longer term objectives are focusing on research into new measurement methods for medical diagnosis (optical biopsy).Industrial interest is on the increase, judging by the number of research contracts we get for exploring new applications and the number of instrumentation companies that want out co-operation in exploiting the measurement technology.
