The project aims to develop a compact low cost very low field MRI scanner. The project is based on the concept of using a superconducting receive coil to detect the weak NMR signal. This will allow a much lower magnetic field to be used than in conventional scanners. This will lead to reductions in both capital and running costs. The low field will reduce the compatibility problems the MRI systems traditionally have with other equipment and allow a more open scanner to be constructed for better patient access. The main research area concerns the superconducting coils.The physics of the loss mechanisms in the superconductor will be studied. A significant amount of materials research is required in order to optimise the material. This will include investigations of the effects of processing, dopants and microstructure on the electrical properties as well as an investigation of novel substrates. Another area of research is coil design. The use of a superconducting coil allows designs that are not possible in conventional systems to be investigated.
