Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal will develop the use of thermal imaging as a real-time non destructive evaluation (NDE) technique for examining quality, performance and safety in composite structures. Composite structures hold out much promise fir use in a variety of industrial applications - for example in the automotive industry, where the developement of lightwieght vehicles is a key priority. The potential environmental and functional benefits together with improvements in the speed of product introduction and manufacturing cycle times make these types of structures attractive to many other industrial fields - computer, electronics, comsumer goods, aerospace to name buta few. However, the widespread adoption of these atructures will only be achieved if structural performance can be validated - a particular requirement is for the development of fast, non-destructive and reliable monitoring and evaluation techniques. Thsi programme will explore the use of thermal imaging, including spate, economic, NDE techniques for composite structures - using lightweight composite vehicle body panels as the application of choice.
