Summary on Grant Application Form
Organic coated steels are materials of primary importance in a wide range of manufacturing industries including the automotive and construction sectors. The performance of organic coated steel in relation to corrosion resistance and resistance to other environmental degradation processes is of vital importance in maintaining the competitive viability of these industries in the UK The present programme will involve the purchase and commissioning of the state-of -the-art FTIR/FTRAMAN Microscopy facility. This will be used to study the performance of surface coatings on a wide variety of steel products which are currently under investigation through an on-going EPSRC funded research projects. The chemical and structural information obtained will be invaluable in work aimed at improving coating performance in a diverse range of applications. In addition, a major new initiative is outlined which will investigate the influence of pigment photochemistry on the performance of organic coatings both in terms of product lifetime and environmental impact.
