Hydrothermal processing of technologically important materials such as BaTiO3 is being increasingly used as a low temperature route for producing fine grained powders with controlled shape, size and purity that can easily be sintered into dense ceramics with uniform grain size. We plan to prepare a range of different grain-sized BaTiO3 ceramics from well-characterised hydrothermally processed powders and determine their permittivity characteristics using ac impedance spectroscopy as opposed to dc or conventional fixed frequency measurements.The electrical data will be analysed using a wide variety of complex plane and spectroscopic plots and will be correlated with other physical measurements, eg electron microscopy, to systematically study the influence of grain core-shall microstructures on the permittivity characteristics of BaTiO3 ceramics. Improved performance and miniaturisation of BaTiO3-based devices can only be achieved through closer control of powder homogeneity, composition, surface area and grain size. Understanding the influence of core-shell microstructure on the electrical characteristics of fine grained BaTiO3 ceramics is therefore of fundamental importance if BaTiO3 is to remain at the forefront of the electro-ceramics industry.
