The proposal seeks funds for a partial funding of a commercial hardness machine to probe the surface mechanical properties of a range of soft solids, particles and fibres. The objective is to obtain contact compliance data which after analysis will provide mechanical response data such as elastic modulii, flow or yield stress and fracture toughness. These data will be obtained as a function of contact strain, deformation time and also with spatial resolution over the surfaces and within the depth of the surfaces. In addition, the contact adhesion will be elucidated. Various systems will be investigated and these include: particulate agglomerates, certain organic polymers with an emphasis upon the effects of surface ageing and solvent-induced plasticisation, the surfaces of synthetics fibres with a focus upon the changes induced by surface modifications, cellular entities including certain food (vegetable) materials, thin organic coatings including tribologically formed layers, a number of systems with significant fluids contents such as gels and pastes, ceramic and food compacts. In each case, the objective is to provide a means of characterising these systems in order to optimise their properties of manufacture or to predict their contact mechanical behaviour in use or in processing operations.
