The use of polyleucine (and related poly amino acids) is asymmetric synthesis has been reported. This catalytic material may be prepared byu a number of simple methods, is durable and recoverable after use by filtration. It is a natural biodegradable material which contains no harmful metals. It has been shown to by particularly effective for the control of asymmetric epoxidation of electron poor alkenes. In this project we shall develop methodology for the reproductible synthesis of samples of polyleucine. The material thus prepared will be applied to a number of asymmetric oxidations and to the control of nucleophilic additions to electron poor alkenes in order to define the limits if its versatility on synthesis. A collaboration between chemist and a polymer chemist is involved.
