Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to investigate new, clean, non-tin methods for radical cyclisation. This will involve the Fe (III) chloride and nitrate SET oxidation of alkenes, cyclopropanes, cyclopropenes and arenes to generate radicals which will undergo mono, tandem and transannular cyclisation to give a range of functionalised cyclopentanes and (3.3.0) bicyclic ring systems. These ring systems are common to a number of biologically important natural products and target systems, and it is hoped that this methodology can be developed as a clean technology for use in their construction. These reactions will also be investigated using a number of radical traps thus introducing futher functionality into the final cyclised products. A further area will investigate the development of a non-toxic reaction for the deoxygenation of alcohols. This will involve the Fe (III) SET oxidation of phenolic carbonates to generate the deoxygenated radicals which can the undergo hydrogen abstraction (reduction) or radical cyclisation onto a suitable alkenyl tether. Overall it is anticipated that the chemistry described in this proposal will provide a non-toxic alternative to some of the extremely valuable radical chemistry that is currently carried out using organotin reagents.
