Summary on Grant Application Form
The main aim of the research proposed will be to model, predict and interpret, with comparison with experimental results, the effect of multi-step reaction chemistry on results obtained earlier fro one step reactions. The phenomena we are concerned with arise from the interaction of pressure variations with flames. They have considerable safety implications through their potential to produce flame acceleration, increased mass burning rates, and even the onset of detonation waves.Mathematical modelling will be supported by substantial numerical computations, and we plan to use multi-step reaction models which will permit comparison of numerical results with experimental results obtained by research groupds at Leeds. In particular we shall be concerned with tracing the effects of pressure variations on radical production (e.g. OH in typical hydrocarbon flames). Specific phenomena, including flame extinction caused by steep pressure drops, and flame acceleration caused by steep pressure rises will be examined to compare the effect of multi-step chemistry on the predictions of earlier, one step models.
