The aero-thermochemistry of pollutant formation in turbulent flames is of fundamental importance through its direct link to energy efficiency and emissions. The formation chemistry of pollutants is often complex and features long kinetic time-scales and thus concentration predictions in turbulent flames require the inclusion of direct kinetic effects. Furthermore, emerging low-emission combustion technologies often contain an element of partial premixing - a feature which is difficult to address in the context of traditional closure methods.The work proposed here aims to build on the ability of the transported pdf approach to handle direct kinetic effects. The latter will be treated comprehensively through systematically reduced reaction schemes combined with a transported pdf closure at the joint velocity-scalar pdf level. The velocity and scalar statistics will be closed at the second moment level by use of Langevin models. The technique will be applied to model flame structures and pollutant levels in a wide range of flames of direct practical relevance. It is expected that the approach taken will offer significant advantages over traditional moment based methods.
