The proposed programme will exploit Ga:La:S glass, an infrared transmitting chalcogenide material developed at the ORC. This glass has the potential to transmit light at wavelengths in the 3-5 micron range through stable, non-toxic optical fibres. When doped with rare earth icons, fluorescence at up to 4.3 microns has been demonstrated. Both these passive and active applications have clear advantages over the current state of the art. Recent success in fibre drawing and long wavelength spectroscopy has attracted considerable industrial interest. This project will build upon recent results through a set of 7 work packages which combine the complimentary skills of the collaborators:1. Glass Engineering - leading to high purity glass for bulk optics and fibres.2. Fibre Fabrication - multimode fibre, leading to low loss single mode fibre.3. Passive Fibre Characterisation - transmission, power handling.4. Spectroscopy - new infrared fluorescence, superfluorescence and lasers.5. Optical Pump Sources - solid-state pumping schemes for new lasers.6. Integrated Fibre Source Development - diode pumped fibre lasers.7. Gas Sensor Development - application of new lasers for gas sensing.The ORC will play key roles in glass melting, fibre fabrication and characterisation and spectroscopy.
