We propose research leading to the realisation of optical systems capable of transferring the shape of complete three-dimensional objects into an electronic representation compatible with standard CAD systems. The proposed instruments are based on coherent optical techniques, employing interference fringe projection to capture views of an object, referenced to absolute co-ordinates by multiple-point measurements by laser range-finding. The multiple views are analysed an synthesised to form the electronic object representation. The measurement systems will be applied to objects with metre-scale dimensions, and with tens-of-microns accuracy. The overall objective is to be able to complete measurements on large-scale objects within a single working day, contrasting with time-scales of weeks for conventional contacting shape measurements.
