Summary on Grant Application Form
The Aston contribution to this LINK Photonics collaborative programme is concerned with the design, fabrication and characterisation of fibre Bragg gratings for the implementation of fibre sensors to be used in concrete structures. Grating sensors will be developed for retrofitting to existing structures and for integration into the fabric of new structures. Aston has specific responsibility for the provision of gratings to other partners for investigating and implementing new grating designs optimised to novel sensor architectures, for developing gratings specifically designed to permit simultaneous determination of strain and temperature, and for contributing to the integration of all of these gratings into field trial sensors. A specific research goal to be addressed collaboratively with UKC is to establish routes to maximisation of the number of sensors in a system. A key feature will be the use of phase mask exposure methods, which will demand the development of methods for precise centre wavelength specification in closely spaced grating arrays. Aston will continue to evaluate advanced structures throughout the duration of the project. All of the proposed work addresses the specific issues of grating optimisation from the standpoint of the concrete environment.
