Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme concentrates on the reactivity of simple and more complex molecules with metal and oxide surfaces and aims to address a number of questions. When metal is dosed with oxygen, when does it become oxide-like in behaviour? What is the role of surface defects, such as anion vacancies, in the surface chemistry of bulk oxide crystals? How does molecular shape affect the stereochemistry of organic molecules at surfaces? What is the role of surface structure and composition in such reactions? Can we 'tailor' molecular orientation to give a particular reaction selectivity? Such questions will be tackled by the use of a variety of metals and oxides, using adsorbate molecules of varying complexity, and will utilise specific surface analytical probes, which already exist at Reading. These include LEED and STM for surface and adsorbate structure determination; a molecular beam reactor and TPD for the assessment of surface reaction kinetics and mechanisms; XPS and Auger for surface/adsorbate composition/valance state determination and infra-red for intermediate identification and orientation.
