The concept of the intelligent building for radio communication has yet to be explored. Realising such a concept will depend heavily on how the structure can be tailored to provide the necessary pass, rejection and isolation of signals at different frequency bands, for the various communication systems and networks, eg personal communications, wireless PXB and wireless LANs. The project has two main aims. The first concerns the frequency selective characteristics of building materials and structures. This involves measurements on typical structures over a wide frequency band to establish basic characteristics. Models for predicting the response will be developed, validated with measurements and used to explore how building construction can be changed to facilitate the use of wireless networks and personal communication systems within a building. The second aim is to apply the expertise gained in frequency selective surface technology (FSS) at the University of Kent to examine the feasibility of developing FSS coatings to enable better building propagation characteristics. This will include examining ways of improving existing buildings, for example forming a picocell network within an office environment or isolating a secure area while allowing other networks to freely propagate between all areas.Key Words: Frequency selective building materials, communications, building, networks, distributed systems.
