Summary on Grant Application Form
Heat driven refrigeration cycles based on the adsorption of active carbon and ammonia refrigerant have been demonstrated in the laboratory. At present, poor heat transfer in the carbon bed (the generator) means that they are comparatively bulky. Sutcliffe Speakman Carbons are developing new active carbons which are monolithic rather than granular and have superior conductivity and porosity properties. Following initial tests at Warwick the material looks very promising in two diverse applications where compactness is of greater importance than very high energy efficiency. These are food preservation (fish catches, etc) in developing countries and environmental control in military vehicles. We will demonstrate the feasibility by constructing a highly integrated adsorbent bed/heat exchanger (generator) using the new materials. It will be based on a specification given by Alvis, a major UK manufacturer of military vehicles, who originally approached Warwick and who are contributing financially to the project.
