Summary on Grant Application Form
This application is intended as a contribution to the EPSRC Flood Channels Programme, Series C and, as such, will form part of the co-ordinated research programme into sediment transport in channels under inbank and overbank conditions. In this proposal a series of experiments with graded sediments are detailed which will take place in the tilting flume at HR Wallingford. The specific objective of this proposal is to examine the respone of graded sdiment systems when their equilibrium is disturbed. This will provide a distinct, yet complementary, data set to that gained in the other elements of the Series C programme and examine a facet of sediment movement which has particular relevance to engineers. The proposal includes four distinct experiment types which correspond to practical problems. These are; a rivers response to water abstraction, the release of bank material as a result of construction work, and the contruction of flood protection embankments. Transport rate, flow velocitiy, longitudinal bed profiles, bed texture and water surface levels will be measured throughout each experiment. The data will increase our knowledge of non-equilibrium behaviou in graded sediment systems.
