Summary on Grant Application Form
Constitutive laws will be developed for the compaction and sintering of powders. These will be based on experimental and theoretical studies of the mechanics of deformation between two contacting particles and detailed computer simulations of the behaviour of arrays of particles. Finite element subroutines will be developed which will allow processing routes to be simulated and optimised. The machining of rocks and loss of borehole stability will also be addressed. PC-based Process Modelling Software will also be developed, which will allow the range of dominance of a given mechanism to be determined, and the effect of different heating and pressure cycles on microstructure development to be assessed.
