Traditional sliding mode approaches assume that full-state information is available. Some work has established theoretical results relating to static uotput feedback control but structural and dimensionality requirements limit their applicability. This project will first consider the potential of dynamic feedback sliding mode control to relax these restrictions. A major theme will be the application of dynamic sliding mode control to nonlinear uncertain systems. No formal analysis is available for dynamic state feedback based sliding mode control; this project will investigate their robustness, particularly to unmatched uncertainty. This insight will facilitate an analysis of the system/observer mismatch in observer based dynamic sliding mode control of nonlinear generalised state-space models. It will also be used to analyse the dynamic sliding mode control of blackbox systems. Demonstrating the practical applicability of these theoretical results is the second objective. An extensive case study, including rig trials, will be undertaken on an automotive engine. This is a particularly relevant and challenging application area as tight performance and safety applications must be maintained over time in a harsh environment which is subject to large temperature variations and high levels of vibration and shock.
