Circuits operating at radiowave frequencies (RF) form a vital analog front-end for today's wireless communications systems. These systems have typically made use of discrete passive components to implement the analog front-end filtering, because the design of the high-selectivity integrated filters at such high frequencies (typically 900MHz - 2GHz) proves to be problematic. The desire for reduced cost and increased reliability has led to drive towards fully-integrated systems which combine RF analog and baseband digital sections on the same substrate. A minimum cost implementation dictates the use of silicon CMOS technology, which has not been used for the implementation of analog RF circuitry due to its inherent frequency limitations. Thus, there is a need for novel analog circuit techniques which can fully exploit the RF possibilities of standard silicon CMOS. This project is concerned with the investigation and development of analog circuits which operate close to the technology limits of silicon CMOS, and are thus capable of implementing front-end band-pass filter circuits. The project will focus on the design of active inductors based on the exploitation of the intrinsic device capacitance, since this appears to be a promising method for the implementation of high frequency integrated filters in CMOS technology.
