Summary on Grant Application Form
A tunable, monochromatic, high-energy IR source (optical parametric oscillator) is required for experiments in four areas of molecular science making use of state-of-the-art laser techniques: (1) cavity ring-down spectroscopy as a diagnostic for molecules and radicals such as CH3 present in CVD reactors used for diamond film deposition, and for HO2 detection and spectroscopy; (2) state-selection of reagents for state-to-state reaction dynamics studied by REMPI and TOF mass spectrometry, including differential cross section measurements; (3) state-selection of molecules and radicals for photodissociation dynamics studies using H-atom photofragment translation spectroscopy or ion-imaging detection to explore the vibrationally mediated dissociation dynamics and to improve values of bond dissociation energies; and (4) IR optical double resonance spectroscopy of C3 and O3 and stimulated emission pumping experiments on HNO. The experiments using the IR source will extend the versatility of the existing apparatus at Bristol and maintain our research program at the forefront of research in molecular science.
