The digital focused beamforming algorithm has significant potential in 3D imaging in a variety of subsea applications, particularly ROV based inspection and survey. Extension to 3D enables multiple look volumetric visualistion of scenes to be generated using two dimensional aperture synthesis from a linear array.By exploiting established beamforming principles squint looking synthetic aperture techniques can be used to image forward of the sonar platform. Each of the imaging techniques will be evaluated through extension of existing simulation and experimental tools. The feasibility of combining 3D image reconstruction and synthetic aperture processing using steered beams to produce volumetric sea bed visualisation ahead of the platform will be assessed through simulation. It is proposed to investigate effects of stabilisation in each of the imaging modes. Supplied navigation data will be used in simulation and experimental validation will take place using an existing prototype sonar systems and three axis motion control system.
