Summary on Grant Application Form
In many underwater scenarios complex tasks must be performed an 3D, such as ROV guidance and IMR. The operator has to achieve these tasks with information gathered from a collection of sensors from which reconstruction of the 3D scene is a skilled and stressful operation. The goal of this project is to improve the 3D scene reconstruction by means of a virtual environment. For acoustical data the new 'Echoscope' camera will be provided by Omnitech, while existing optical systems will be used. Various methods of sensor fusion will be investigated to provide a fast robust technique for providing useful synthetic environment to optimise the task without providing excess detail. It is hoped that the information to perform the task without providing excess detail. It is hoped that the information to perform the task without providing excess detail. It is hoped that the synthetic environment will be displayed using 'desktop virtual reality' systems under development jointly by UCL and Sira Ltd.
