Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for a fundamental study into the nature and design parameters governing a novel type of temperature sensor - the acoustic pyrometer. Such a sensor has a very wide application in a number of industries due to its insensitivity to radiation, potential accuracy and non-contact measurement concept. The fundamental problems associated with the design and operation of the acoustic pyrometer system is the need to overcome plant background noise, signal reverberation and echoes. The present research aims to study these issues and explore the possible solutions. This will include generic study into: choice of sound frequency; noise reduction strategy;acoustic geometry optimisation; and plant noise characterisation. The research is strongly supported by two companies and is a fundamental experimental study integrated into a sound theoretical concept. It progresses logically from laboratory scale studies through to industrial testing and has great promise. The need for research into novel sensor technology is very strong. This research will lay important foundations into the area of acoustic temperature measurement and is both timely and vital. In particular, sensor technology has the highest priority in the OST's Foresight document.
