This project aims to develop a computational procedure which would allow the dynamic flow forces within fast-moving spool valves to be calculated. The detailed resolution of the complex flow and their influence on overall operational parameters can only be achieved by the use of advanced numerical techniques combined with realistic turbulent models. The present proposal puts foward a collaborative research programme that aims to develop computational practices capable of returning the valve performance characteristics for various design modifications. The work will be focused on configurations pertaining to high-pressure fuel-injection systems; low pressure aircraft complexity necessitates the development and validation of elaborate mathematical simulation techniques featuring grid portions which move and slide relative to one another; multi-block and into-penetrating grids to cater for complex 3D features; accurate discretisation in time and space; turbulence models which are sufficiently realistic for separated flow. The project is in collaboration with an industrial partner, and his input will be in the form of a substantial financial contribution to the cost of (10, 000 per annum) and the provision of experimental data for a generic spool valve, generated especially for the purpose of validating the computational procedure to be developed.
