Summary on Grant Application Form
An experimental investigation will be performed of the mofifications to the linear and non-linear optical proeprties of a medium in the presence of a strong coupling field that indues transparency. A single mode tunable pulsed laser will provide this strong coupling field in the study of a number of atomic schemes. These include lithium where both linear optical poreprties (induced transparency) and non-linear optical properties (four wave mixing) will be investigated under the same experimental coniditions. VUV generation from four wave mixing schemes enhanced by transparancy will be investigated in the noble gases Kr and Xe. Emphasis will be placed on understandig the fundamental coherence physics of the phenomena and on establishing the likely limits to these effects in practically realisable schemes.
