Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent advances in computer power have presented the opportunity to enhance flight mechanics models by the incorporation of more comprehensive main rotor and tail rotor aerodynamic models. With few exceptions, the representation of aerodynamics in flight mechanics models has been on a simplistic basis whilst much effort has been expended to evolve ever more sophisticated aerodynamic design tools. This project aims to draw on expertise from both disciplines to investigate enhanced wake modelling for rotorcraft flight simulation. Initially, the work will involve the evaluation of candidate wake models with reference to the necessary compromise between model speed and the capability to adequately address current perceived weakness of contemporary aerodynamic representations within flight mechanics models. Following this, implementation of the chosen strategy within an existing individual blade flight mechanics code will be undertaken. On completion of this stage, the important task of model validation will be carried out using an extensive database compiled from in- flight experiments using the DRA Bedford Lynx helicopter.
