Heteropolyoxometallates (HPMs) are a vast group of compounds. Many members of this group show promising catalytic and electrocatalytic activity, however such members tend to be found empirically and not through a-priori design. The aim of this project is to determine which factors in the electronic and physical structure of HPMs affect their reactivity. This will be achieved through both the experimental and theoretical study of a set of carefully chosen HPMs. Their activity and catalytic selectivity towards two noteworthy chemical reactions - the oxidation of CO and the Oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol will be studied. Electrochemical techniques will be used to decouple separates steps within these two reactions. Ab initio molecular modelling techniques (previously not attempted on these compounds) will provide quantitative information about their electronic structure. The experimentally determined catalytic activities and calculated electronic structures will be used to ascertain which factors lead to high catalytic activity. The HPMs which have been selected offer a graded variation in their composition, so that catalytic activity and electronic structure may be followed as a function of substitutional modification.
