Summary on Grant Application Form
There is continued pressure on flexible magnetic media for more data stored in ever decreasing package sizes. As recording densities increase, the recording wavelength is reduced and the trend is to thinner magnetic coatings, smaller read/write head spacings and smaller read/write head dimensions. This produces acute tribological contact problems. It is these contact problems which are now and will increasingly in the future be significant limiting factors in dynamic magnetic storage technology development. In this programme it is intended to study and identify specific mechanism of wear and friction for particulate and metal evaporated media/head interfaces for linear transport systems and to explain the relevance of these mechanisms to signal performance, mechanical performance and durability. A feature of the study is the extensive use of surface analysis. It is intended that the investigations will include not only the most important variable media parameters and configurations, but also where possible a comprehensive range of materials to be used for read/write heads. No such comprehensive study has been attempted before and as a consequence of this there is no data base of knowledge in the area of flexible magnetic storage system tribology on which to base future advances in this field.
