Summary on Grant Application Form
Bose-Einstein Condensation in a weakly interacting atomic gas can now be achieved using techniques which we have been working on in Oxford. Our immediate aim is to measure the properties of this novel system, such as momentum distribution and vibrational frequencies, for the case of Cs in order to test some new theoretical predictions of Dr Burnett and co-workers. In future work, a system giving a larger number in the condensate will be built and used to investigate the as yet uncertain light scattering properties and other (non-destructive) probes. We also wish to develop our novel type of interferometer into a precise instrument to be applied, at first, to fundamental physics.
