Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research aims to investigate the dispersion of traffic pollution in the urban environment. Wind tunnel experiment, field, testing and CFD simulations will be used to quantify exposure levels around roads/buildings, investigate the effect of traffic conditions, traffic control measures, weather and building design/grouping on transmission of traffic pollution and identify measures or techniques (eg, pollution barriers, separation space/land belt between roads and buildings, appropriate traffic calming measures and vent locations) for abatement of this transmission. The large-scale environmental wind-tunnel facility at the University of Nottingham and the mobile pollution monitoring facility developed under previous EPSRC funded projects will be used in the study. The results will be valuable to local authorities, relevant government departments, environmental and health organisations, building services engineers and building designers.
