Summary on Grant Application Form
A research programme on unsteady, separated external flows over aerofoils using advanced turbulence models is proposed. The work programme focuses principally on non-linear eddy-viscosity models and second-moment closure for unsteady separated flows. Rigorous assessment of the numerical solutions will be on the basis of comparisons with experimental results of the numerical predictions obtained by algebraic, one-equation and linear eddy-viscosity models. Using the proposed models, unsteady flows over oscillating aerofoils at dynamic-stall conditions will be investigated. Westland helicopters will provide geometrical and experimental data pertinent to the design of rotors of modern helicopters. Additionally, experimental data from recent literature will be used for validating the proposed turbulence models. Fully turbulent flows as well as the effect of laminar to turbulent transition over oscillating aerofoils will be studied in a wide regime of Mach and Reynolds numbers. The effects of different numerical algorithms on the accuracy and efficiency of the unsteady solutions will also be examined.
