Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective is to devise accurate and very efficient algorithms for high Reynolds number viscous flow computations on unstructured grids for complex geometries. This is to be achieved by the novel use of hybrid unstructured grids composed of a mix of tetrahedra, prisms and hexahedra, retaining some structure across the boundary layer regions in the grid in which the most extreme grid cell stretching takes place. This partial structure will enable discretisations and solution algorithms which are themselves hybrids of standard structured methods (characteristic smoothing and implicit solvers) and unstructured methods (explicit finite volume with less sophisticated smoothing). The use of parallel computing and multigrid acceleration will be vital in achieving rapid solutions on grids of up to 10 million cells.
