Summary on Grant Application Form
BP Solar's thin film cell technology provides the potential for products such as the Apollo CdS/CsTe thin film photovoltaic cell. The cells are based on n-CdS/p-CdTe heterojunctions on tin oxide (TO) coated glass. An important outstanding issue is the minimisation of the generation of cadmium containing waste. The CdS thin films are deposited using Chemical Bath Deposition (CBD) and only about 2% of the initial chemicals are utilised in a batch process. The residues are carefully disposed of but the simple scale-up of the present process will generate a considerable quantities of waste (e.g. 5,000 tons/yr. Waste for 10 mw plant). An efficient system for recovering and recycling cadmium and other chemicals from the CBD solutions is required in order to minimise waste generation and effluent from the process. The goal of this project is to develop a recyclable CBD CdS process in which more than 99% of the cadmium is recovered or utilised.
