Certain classes of material are known to possess the unusual property of zero or even negative thermal expansion coefficient - i.e. They do not expand when heated. This property has many important applications in industry, for example in high temperatures ceramics such as catalyst supports in automobile emission systems, where the thermal shock resistance of the material is greatly improved due to the lack of expansion. Materials with other functions, such as battery materials and heterogeneous catalysts for the petroleum industry may also benefit from this property. We aim to carry out a detailed variable temperature crystallographic study using powder diffraction methods (X-ray and neutron) of several classes of these materials in order to pinpoint the critical structural features governing their behaviour, and thus aid the design of new materials with tailored properties.
