Summary on Grant Application Form
In this project we employ a hybrid serial-parallel correlation technique to provide fast and reliable code acquisition performance in environments with poor quality communication channels including severe Doppler effects. The flexibility of this technique allows the system to adapt the way in which correlations are combined during the dwell time such that channel conditions including the Doppler shift are taken into account. The use of serial-parallel correlator, combined with a maximum likelihood FFT technique to compensate for the Doppler shift, minimises the code acquisition times by searching both the Doppler and code phase dimensions of the acquisition ambiguity function simultaneously. The results of this research will have applications in modern spread spectrum systems which operate over mobile radio channels including future satellite systems providing global coverage. The work is particularly relevant to the application of LEO satellite systems for mobile communications.
