Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will integrate 3D 'on-the-fly', or non-predictive, computer animation with existing multimedia components (video, pre-recorded sound and animation) in order to produce an integrated virtual environment which can respond to the actions of an 'audience', but which can be controlled by the author to maintain a narrative. Such an integrated environment will take advantage of the potential performance of distributed operation. At the moment the techniques for the generation of both sound, video and motion for these situations do not exist, as previous researchers have concentrated on developing techniques which improve the control of a predicted event, not mechanisms for controlling the manner in which the environment may respond to a sequence of possible events, which are machine initiated. This new approach will provide a powerful new media for use by multimedia authors in the construction of a presentation.
