The reinforced concrete beam is one of the main structural forms currently used in the construction industry; the system is uneconomic in terms of the utilisation of the material in the beam. Over half of the construction material (in the tension zone) has no function but to protect the steel reinforcement against the environment into which the beam is placed and to retain the steel in position. A more efficient construction would be one in which the materials forming the unit are used to their best advantage; such a beam would be a composite of polymer composite/concrete construction. The beam unit which will be developed will consist of thin walled tensile region and a high compressive strength material positioned in the compression manufactured from pre-impregnated polymer composites and concrete; various loading modes will be investigated, a numerical model will be developed to analyse the system and to undertake parameter studies on a demonstrator beam.The technology transfer of this innovative highway structural unit study will be via an industrial led Department of Environment project which is currently being formed to manufacture a prototype beam. This innovative beam system could influence the design procedures for beams to ensure that the materials are used to their full potential.
