The purpose of the proposed project is establish the position of a group of UK firms on a range of measures of product development performance ( and practice) benchmarks, and to locate the performance of these firms against international standards. The project will focus on firms in the electronics industry, and include both industrial and consumer products. The Design Council are collaborators in the project, and they will fund the international element of the project, specifically with respect to product development in firms located in the US and Japan. The project builds on a pilot study of four UK electronics manufacturers undertaken in early 1995, under the sponsorship of the Design Council.Key Words: Design, product development, benchmarking, electronics industry.
