Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the proposed research is to quantify the structural response of a typical steel offshore topside module subjected to an interal hydrocarbon explosion using non-linear finite element analysis. This work forms a continuation of earlier SERC funded work (Grant: GR/J/42885) where the response of stiffened panels effect of the pressure-time characteristics of the blast, restraint provided by the surrounding structure, local member buckling, the behaviour of the welded joints and the degree of membrane action that can be developed in plate components. The work will be monitored by a senior engineer from industry such that the presentation of the results will be of benefit to engineers at a preliminary design or for safety studies. The results will also be used to critically appraise and extend existing design techniques. Some of the results will also be validated against experimental data.
