Summary on Grant Application Form
There is no single KDD algorithm that is suitable for all classes of database and all kinds of KDD task. Furthermore, most KDD algorithms run too slowly to be of practical use on realistic databases. However, initial studies indicate that the majority of data mining activity depends upon a small set of generic primitive operations. We propose to quantify this belief and transform the generic primitives into SQL in such a way that it becomes easier to exploit data-parallelism. We will then analyse the performance of primitives when running on commercially available parallel database servers (SP2, Goldrush, WX9010), in collaboration with our industrial partners. After and necessary enhancements, we will encapsulate our primitives in KDD tools that can be used by non-experts for decision support on realistic volumes of data in a DBMS data-warehousing environment. In due course, we expect our industrial partners to be able to incorporate out KDD tools into products.
