Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme is focused on the creation of novel fullerene-related nanoscale structures with device-type behaviour (eg electrical, optical, etc...) and applications as advanced materials (with unique chemical, tensile etc... properties). These goals will be achieved by developing a range of new techniques to create specific novel structures via carefully controlled chemical reactions, new condensed phase approaches (eg thermolytic, electrolytic, catalytic) and the application of customer synthesised organometallic cluster catalysts in order to achieve structure control. Various physical techniques will be used to prove the behaviour eg (HRTEM) High Resolution Electron Microscopy, X-ray analysis, Surface Techniques (eg STM) Scanning Tunneling Microscopy etc). It is intended to collaborate with other UK groups eg Nottingham (STM) and probe structural and physical behaviour at the single entity level using state-of-the-art physical techniques. The programme is an interdisciplinary one and aims to build on the numerous key advances made at Sussex in previous programmes as well as the present rolling grant.
